New Ask Us Theory About
Laughing Stock

All Your Base Are Belong to Us!

We've spoken a lot about Engrish, or English as rendered by non-native speakers.  We can't believe we were unaware of the following until several readers recently brought it to our attention:

Back in the 80's a game was made in Japan for the Sega Genesis [system]. Attempting to get all the money they could off their game - Zero Wing - the game designers decided to save some cash and translate the text from the game's intro movie into English themselves so the game could be marketed in America. The result is painfully hilarious Engrish, and one particular phrase - All your base are belong to us - has become the rallying cry of internet-junkies around the country.

Below are stills from the video in animated GIF format, showing the hilarious dialogue.  Any of the current mainstream browsers can view the animated GIF.  You may also see the Flash version of the game's opening, with sound, here.  (If you don't have Flash, a small plug-in for your browser which enables the browser to view Flash animation, download it here.)
