Guestmudgeon Gordon Brown had a name...

Here's an annoying locution a lot of people have. You often hear this when someone is taking down or looking up some information about you: "What was your name?" Uh ... I didn't realize my name had changed. What was my name before what happened? Do you mean what *is* my name?

Hee hee.  Of course, that's possibly short for "What did you say was your name/your name was?" But it's still irritating, especially if you hadn't previously said your name!

Have you heard or read similar or equally distressing usages?
