New Ask Us Theory About

curmdgeon.GIF (1254 bytes) Curmudgeons' Corner

Malcolm Tent couln'nt believe his ears

There seems to be a new pronunciation fad these days.  Instead of pronouncing the D in words like didn't, couldn't, and wouldn't, among others, I often hear people saying "din'nt", "couln'nt", and "wouln'nt".  Evolution of pronunciation or weird dialect?  Maybe they're the same thing.  Well, it still bothers me!  I am a curmudgeon, after all.

We, of course, never make pronouncements about how a word should be pronounced.  On the other hand, since Malcolm mentioned this we have been noticing Ns for Ds everywhere.  Especially in the word presinentPresident, that is.

Is there something you read or hear that sends you up the wall?
