People often say and write, in the workplace, I inputted the data or the data was inputted.  Please, please, confirm that this is wrong!

Yes, we agree!  It should be "the data were inputted".

Seriously, saying inputted is as wrong as saying putted.  You wouldn't say I putted the dish on the table (though you might say I putted the ball on the green).
